After High School I started working in construction and then moved to law enforcement. I worked as a correctional officer and Deputy sheriff for fifteen years.
I taught martial arts for several years. I wanted to open a school at one point and learned running a martial arts school and being a martial artist are very different. Some can do both but, in my case, I was a martial artist not a martial arts school. I had to learn how to retain students. I had to learn how to be a martial arts school. At the same time my wife had a house cleaning business and again she had a hard time keeping employees which is similar to keeping students or a trucking company keeping drivers. I have also owned a landscaping business along with a few other small startup businesses.
Martial artist create contracts to keep their students. The students feel obligated. Some martial arts places pair up with other martial artist or gyms in order to keep students. Pairing up greatly improves student retention and increases profit. I used these concepts with my wife’s house cleaning business. She paired up with other house cleaning businesses and instead of being short employees she could rely on other cleaning businesses. I built polices for truck drivers using these ideas and I even came up with the pledge using the tactics we use.
I started truck driving in 2018. My first orientation we showed up, we took a drug test, we took a driving test, and we started driving. My wife and I started driving as a team driver in 2021. The company was the same and when we left that one we found every company we went to was exactly the same. We were told things by a recruiter and then found after being hired it was very different. Orientation has become nothing but a factory and it shows. Being hired should be a long-term commitment and it should be very informative. The driver should know the history of the company, the yard locations, and so much more. I created polices on my experience and as a business owner.
The pledge is the same concept of teaming up with other martial arts instructors or other house cleaning business. Another instructor helping me teach or another business helping my wife was no different.
In trucking I see the need for this. So many small companies are competing while the large companies are taking over. In the next five- or ten-years automation or robotic drivers will exist.
I am confident that I can look at a company just like another business would. I will visit the company, look at the safety score, overall fitness score, and look at the company as a whole such as newer or older equipment. I would report my findings on the page to keep you informed.
